Discussion on Vortex - Responsive HTML5 Portfolio

I love this website template (theme). I am new to HTML/CSS/JavaScript coding (had a stroke and had to reinvent myself in my 50s). My question is, is there a best way to add an SMS opt-in and opt-out on the Contact page? I was going to use the following:

<a href="sms:+12222222">Click to subscribe to SMS alerts!</a>

Or should there be a JavaScript function or "if" statement?
